Nicknamed IlayaThalapathy (English: Young General) by his fans, he has appeared in more than 50 films and earned accolades, including Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, and has been described as one of the most successful stars of Tamil cinema.
The son of film director and producer S. A. Chandrasekhar and playback singer Shoba Chandrasekhar, Vijay initially appeared as a child actor in a number of his father's films, starting with Vetri (1984), and later made his debut as a lead actor in Naalaya Theerpu(1992), also film by his father. The family drama Poove Unakkaga (1996) marked a turning point in his career and he then went on to appear in commercially successful films like
